College Crosse Recap
Another thriller for Irish fans as Notre Dame escapes with an 8-7 win in Arlotta. Yesterday was Notre Dame's third overtime game on the season (2-1) and the win pushed ND's record to 9-1 on the season (3-0 in the ACC). Notre Dame was led in scoring by the kid, Matt Kavanagh, who buried 4 goals on the afternoon. Matt's 4th goal of the day, 30 seconds into overtime, was the game winner.
Though ND's Sergio Perkovic had a bit of a quiet night (1 G), Ryder Garnsey found the net for his 14th goal on the season and added an assist on the afternoon as well. Matt Kavanagh also added an important EMO goal in the 3rd quarter to stop a 3 goal run by Marquette after halftime.
Marquette gave the Irish everything they could handle. The Golden Eagles clawed back from a 5-2 halftime deficit to tie the game up at 7 on Ryan McNamara's unassisted goal with 8 minutes left in the 4th quarter. Marquette got after it on defense, the Irish ended the game with 3 more turnovers than Marquette (17-14) and ND failed to clear the ball cleanly 4 times (11/15). However, Notre Dame's Shane Doss' 9 saves and a big night from senior Matt Kavanagh (4 Gs and 1 A) was just enough to deny Marquette a major 2016 W.
Another good win for Notre Dame. They and Denver are probably the only no doubt at-large teams so far this season. Marquette demonstrated what Golden Eagles fans and Philadelphia bloggers have been saying all year long; Marquette's a tough, good team, and a threat to win the Big East. The loss drops MU to 8-2 on the season (3-0 in the Big East) but the Golden Eagles have a couple more opportunities for a big win before the regular season ends. *Everyone stares at Denver.*
