Previewing Detroit Mercy’s 2018 Schedule

Despite a 3-3 conference record, can the Titans improve on their 5-11 overall record from a year ago?

Detroit Mercy Athletics

The Detroit Mercy Titans are the 50th team in our 2018 schedule preview series and the third team from the MAAC. The Titans finished last season with a 5-11 record, but did get the fourth and final seed in the MAAC Tournament, where they fell to top seed Monmouth, 11-7.

Here’s the entire 2018 schedule:

Detroit Mercy’s 2018 Schedule

Date Road Team Home Team Special Notes Last Year's Meeting(s)

Detroit Mercy has one less game than they did a year ago. They take out Michigan and Robert Morris and replace one of those open slots with Notre Dame after a one-year hiatus.

Let’s check out some notable games on this schedule:

Best Nonconference Game: vs. Marquette

The past two meetings have been decided by two goals each. The Golden Eagles went on to win the Big East Championship in both seasons. But both of those games were also the second game for each team in the Midwest Classic. Marquette has a full week off, while the Titans have four days off before this meeting. More rest for the Big East champs means a better performance?

Best Conference Game: vs. Siena

The Saints started last season 0-10, with their last loss during that stretch coming against the Titans. After that, they won three straight and just needed to beat Marist in order to leapfrog past UDM for the MAAC Tournament. They lost the lead in the fourth quarter. Whether or not Siena has a bad start to the season early, expect the Saints to put up a fight, and possibly a very important one too.

Under The Radar Game: @ Jacksonville

The same could be said with the Dolphins, except they were able to make their conference tournament. A midweek game down in Florida could be very nice for the Titans who reside in Detroit, which is usually cold. John Galloway’s squad should start 2018 better than last year.

Possible Upset: vs. Air Force

With everything going on with the Falcons’ program in recent months, it wouldn’t be that big of a surprise if the Titans get a big nonconference win against the back-to-back SoCon champions. Who knows what players will remain, but look for Matthew Vangalen and company to take advantage.
