Previewing Siena’s 2018 Schedule

Will the Saints carry over last year’s hot finish?

Siena Athletics

The Siena Saints are the 63rd team in our 2018 schedule preview series and the seventh and final team from the MAAC. The Saints began last season 0-10 before winning three straight games to stay in contention for the MAAC Tournament, but lost a 5-1 fourth quarter lead against Marist to end any postseason hopes.

Here’s the entire 2018 schedule:

Siena’s 2018 Schedule

Date Road Team Home Team Special Notes Last Year's Meeting(s)

3/3 Siena Michigan First ever meeting
3/10 Siena St. John's 13-12 L
3/13 Bryant Siena 18-13 L

3/24 Canisius Siena MAAC 11-10 W
3/27 Siena Binghamton 10-5 L

4/7 Marist Siena MAAC 6-5 L
4/10 Princeton Siena First ever meeting
4/20 Siena Detroit Mercy MAAC 10-6 L
4/27 Siena Manhattan MAAC 16-6 W

The Saints replace Colgate, Syracuse, and Virginia with Michigan and Princeton. Siena will have one less game than they did in 2017.

Let’s check out some notable games on this schedule:

Best Nonconference Game: @ Hobart (In Victor, New York)

Last year’s second game was decided by only a goal. The Statesmen scored 12 times in the first half, but Siena scored seven goals in the final quarter to make things interesting. The damage was done however. Would love to see another shootout.

Best Conference Game: vs. Marist

The revenge game! Imagine if Siena held onto that lead. Would they have won the MAAC? Probably not. But, it’s a hypothetical question. The Saints host the Red Foxes, who are favorites to win the MAAC conference in 2018. At least it won’t be the regular season finale this time.

Under The Radar Game: @ Detroit Mercy

The Titans match Siena senior Chris Robertson with Matthew Vangalen, who had 47 points as a freshman attackman last season. Vangalen was one of a few bright spots for Detroit Mercy last year, but the game itself could mean MAAC Tournament implications for both teams. Familiar territory for Siena.

Possible Upset: vs. Bryant

The Saints would have to try really hard to be worse than they did last year, even though they were competitive in many of their games. The Bulldogs won the NEC and look poised to try to take the league crown again. But if senior Aaron Lewis doesn’t do the trick, Siena will need to go with either Anthony Tebbano or Eric Cecere, both of whom are freshmen.
