The new home of the Penn State Nittany Lions has begun construction.

Speaking of Penn State, Paddy Cotter of The Daily Collegian writes about Chris Hogan’s story on being the lacrosse player fighting for a spot in football:

Hogan set a certain pace for his teammates. Dedication in the weight room and rigorous conditioning was common practice for him. That focus on physical improvement allowed Hogan to assume his aggressive on-field style.

“He was one of the leaders,” [Glenn] Thiel said. “He was a poised, confident and aggressive kid. He was somebody people emulated because of how hard he worked.”

Hogan was in the starting lineup every season except for one. An injury allotted him a medical-redshirt season, tacking on an extra year of eligibility. That year became Hogan’s ticket to playing the sport for which he longed.

After his senior year, Hogan used the window of opportunity to play collegiate football. It was his final year of eligibility that erased the gut feeling that boiled in Beaver Stadium.

Put a ring on it, coach Poillon!

Who really is New York’s team?

Disappointing news: Strawberry Mansion graduate Nadirah McRae was supposed to join the Hartford Hawks women’s lacrosse program this fall as a freshman. Unfortunately, as Louis Bolling from the Huffington Post explains, that’s not happening.

Strawberry Mansion High School administrators, School District of Philadelphia employees, failed to submit the standout student-athlete’s official transcripts to the Connecticut-based university and the National Collegiate Athletic Association, which regulates collegiate athletics and athletes.

“It’s a pretty sad day to say the least. It’s challenging to articulate and clearly explain to a young lady, like Nadirah, that the dysfunctional and damaging school system has failed her,” said Jazmine A. Smith.

Smith served as McRae’s lacrosse and field hockey coach before she was informed, in June, that her contract was not being renewed.

“She has worked extremely hard to overcome challenges that are truly traumatic and managed to develop her skills on and off the athletic fields,” said Smith.

“Her goal, and the next progression in her journey, was to attend a university as a student-athlete. Coach Meg stepped up on behalf of the University of Hartford, but Nadirah was failed by the powers that be within Strawberry Mansion High School and those we’ve reached out to, to advocate on behalf of her, as well as her teammates.”
