North Carolina 13 vs. Notre Dame 9 | North Carolina Recap |
College Crosse Recap.
The Tar Heels are going back to Championship Weekend! The Heels beat Notre Dame 13-9 in a game that wasn't really that close. Notre Dame was able to find some offense late in the game as they scored the final 5 goals. However, Carolina built a solid 13-4 lead with 12:20 left in the 4th and pretty much had the game in hand by the time Notre Dame went on their run. There wasn't enough time and Carolina's defense was too good for Notre Dame to mount a real comeback.
The Heels, led by Steve Pontrello with four goals and two assists, were too much offensively for Notre Dame. Carolina went into halftime up 6-2 and then went on a 6-1 run in the third quarter to take full control of the game. Chris Cloutier had three goals and three assists on the afternoon. Additionally Michael Tagliaferri and Luke Goldstock also finished the game with 2 goals each. Brian Balkam had a great game and finished with 14 saves, including 8 in the 4th quarter.
Notre Dame's Mikey Wynne fought valiantly in the losing effort. Wynne finished with 4 goals on the afternoon. Matt Kavanagh got on the board early with a goal in the 1st quarter, but didn't score again until late in the 4th. No other Notre Dame player had more than 1 goal. Shane Doss had a tough day, especially in the 3rd when Carolina scored 6 goals on 16 shots.
