Lacrosse the Internet: February 5, 2014

Zach Herreweyers is out for the season for Loyola, Mount St. Mary's struggled against Richmond, and more.

This is obviously your favorite site, but other people actually write important stuff sometimes. Now is that sometimes.

A Full Pint

Growing pains on display in Mount St. Mary's men's lacrosse scrimmage vs. Richmond
Woof!

The inexperience that coach Tom Gravante anticipated seeing from a Mount St. Mary’s team that graduated 22 seniors last May came to fruition in Saturday’s scrimmage against Richmond.

The Mountaineers committed 23 turnovers in four 15-minute quarters and fared poorly overall against the Spiders, who are making their college lacrosse debut this season. But Gravante said the mistakes were not shocking.

“My staff anticipated not performing to our ability for a couple reasons,” he said Tuesday evening. “One, we’re a brand-new team, and we’re a little bit young. We have one returning starter with legitimate minutes offensively. There’s a lot of new faces. Even if they’re upperclassmen, they haven’t played or started a game. So it’s brand new to kids."

I don't even. The NEC isn't full of mercenaries this season, but this isn't a good sign for The Mount. Finishing in the bottom half of the league looks reasonable for the Mountaineers at this point, and that's a tough pill to swallow for a program that had its eyes squarely affixed on the NCAA Tournament last season and failed to take that step.

Loyola's Herreweyers to Miss 2014; Carolina, Syracuse Injury Updates; Jackson to RIT
Welp!

Loyola sophomore attackman Zach Herreweyers is ineligible and will miss the 2014 season, a team source confirmed Tuesday. Herreweyers participated in Loyola's fall scrimmages but did not play against North Carolina last Saturday. The Greyhounds open up against Virginia in Charlottesville on Thursday.

Herreweyers was expected to carry a fairly heavy load for the 'Hounds this season. Compounded with the fact that Loyola opens their season with Virginia on Thursday, Herreweyers ineligibility creates all kinds of issues for Loyola in both the short and long term.
