The delicate task of clearing snow, Ty Thompson scares a nation, and more.

This is obviously your favorite site, but other people actually write important stuff sometimes. Now is that sometimes.

A Full Pint

A Foot Of Snow On Stony Brook Campus 24 Hours Before Lacrosse Opener's? No Problem!
First of all, this should never be necessary. February lacrosse is dumb. Second of all, I had no idea that removing snow from turf was such a sophisticated task:

Over a foot of snow on the field at LaValle Stadium, and less than 24 hours until the men’s lacrosse home opener. Phil and the athletic department staff, have a conversation. Canceling the event is not an option. Phil enlists the help of the folks at Land Tek, an outside contractor that among other things, installs artificial turf, and maintains those properties. They work with the university on a routine basis, and at times, it’s tough to distinguish their key personnel as actually being outside contractors.

Guy Fitzgerald is a manager at Land Tek and on most days, he and his team can be found on campus at Stony Brook, helping to maintain outdoor playing surfaces for the student-athletes. Removing over a foot of snow, from a $1 million dollar plus artificial playing surface is not as simple as dropping a plow blade and hitting the gas pedal. When Phil finished his conversation with the athletic department staff, Guy’s phone rang. The answer is always “Yes”, and spend five minutes talking to Guy about his work around the university and it’s clear he not only enjoys what he does, but he takes pride in his work.

In a Bobcat with a small bucket attached, Guy himself, went to work carefully clearing the artificial surface at LaValle Stadium.

I still don't understand why they don't clear the field with flamethrowers. Use your heads, people!

A loss UAlbany can stand
Albany plays a handful of elite competition this season (Drexel, Penn State, Hopkins, etc.), and Ty Thompson's comments after falling just short against Syracuse probably made a lot of opposing coaches seriously consider hiring a head hunter to take a job in insurance or something rather than gameplanning to stop the Thompson Trio:

"I don't think at any point any of us thought we were going to lose," Ty Thompson said. "We fought back to force overtime. We fell short. And we'll be back."

The Great Danes are the hardest matchup in college lacrosse. There's nothing like this . . . I don't even know how to characterize Albany's offense. It's just a thing. And it does awful, terrible stuff to defenses.
