Lacrosse the Internet: January 9, 2014

Staats has work to do before enrolling at Syracuse, a higher-than-acceptable level of college athletes struggle to read, and more.

This is obviously your favorite site, but other people actually write important stuff sometimes. Now is that sometimes.

A Full Pint

Staats misses Syracuse media day, reportedly finishing coursework at OCC before enrolling at SU

OCC's Staats En Route to Syracuse as Planned
Syracuse is loaded with offensive options this season (the Orange is as deep and multi-faceted as any team in the nation through the attack and midfield, a fact that creates a crisis of decision both for Syracuse's coaching staff and for the Orange's opposition), but the potential addition of Randy Staats elevates Syracuse from the potentially destructive to the possibly catastrophic. Staats is an electric option at either the midfield or in-close, and ESPN's Paul Carcaterra drove home that fact the other day:

The Orange have experienced some struggles getting cats qualified out of OCC over the years, but if Staats can get to campus in the next week or two, Syracuse should have a cache of weapons available that few schools can match.

Some college athletes play like adults, read like 5th-graders
I don't think that these literacy concerns are as prevalent in college lacrosse as they are for revenue-generating concerns like basketball and football, but I'm sure that similar issues exist in pockets in Division I lacrosse. This is a major issue for collegiate sports and reflects on this nation's values.
