Kaboom!

The last time that Cleveland State's Division I dreams were broadcast to the humans of Earth (and, if they're interested, aliens flying through the galaxy surveying Earth as a target for eventual destruction), the school noted that the earliest that the Vikings would enter the highest level of college lacrosse would be Spring 2017. As it turns, that timeline was less an approximation and more a hard bullseye to hit: Cleveland State is going Division I in the near future and will have one season of build up before throwing hands with the nation's best. To the press release!

Cleveland State University has announced that it will establish a varsity men's lacrosse program and begin recruiting athletes to compete in the spring season of the 2016-2017 academic year.

The addition comes as a result of a program prioritization process headed by CSU Athletics Director John Parry that explored factors including funding, competitiveness and national trends. Lacrosse is the fastest growing sport in the U.S. among high school athletes, and the CSU team will be the second NCAA Division I program in Ohio, joining Ohio State University.

"The addition of lacrosse brings to CSU a spectator sport that will build on the activities and excitement happening across the campus. We anticipate that students and the community will be attracted to Krenzler Field for a unique opportunity to see high-level competition," Parry said.

The prioritization process mirrors efforts across the university to best align resources with programs and activities that display strong growth potential. The review resulted in the determination that university funding for men's wrestling would be discontinued following the conclusion of the 2015-2016 season. The university will explore external funding sources that if secured, could allow continuation of the program.

The Vikings will become the 70th Division I men's program when it enters competition in 2017, serving as Ohio's second Division I team. The school will have time to find a conference as its traditional home -- the Horizon League -- does not sponsor a men's lacrosse championship (interestingly, Detroit is a member of the Horizon League and runs its ball in the MAAC for lacrosse purposes).

The excitement around Cleveland State's decision to make Division I lacrosse a thing at the university is tempered by the fact that the school will cut men's wrestling if external funding is not found to sustain the program. "Cut and Add" is no good for any sport, and even though lacrosse has been the beneficiary of this method over recent seasons, the trend toward adopting this method is disappointing. There is an issue in college sports when wrestling loses 55 programs at the Division I level between 1988-89 and 2013-2014. Lacrosse could suffer the same fate in the future if "Cut and Add" isn't tempered in its deployment.

The Vikings are still considering adding men's lacrosse, but it won't happen before the 2017 season.

In September, Lacrosse Magazine opened up the Ark of the Covenant and didn't have its face melted, instead discovering that Cleveland State was considering adding a Division I men's lacrosse program to its slate of athletic offerings. The potential genesis point for the Vikings at college lacrosse's highest level pointed toward the 2016 season, and Cleveland.com confirmed the university's desire to get a program going as recently as mid-November. The timeline for Cleveland State -- which would become Ohio's second Division I program alongside Ohio State -- to throw hands with the NCAA's best programs has, however, been pushed back.

As Corey McLaughlin at Lacrosse Magazine reports:

The earliest a new NCAA Division I men's lacrosse program at Cleveland State University will debut is the spring of 2017 as the school is still working on funding for the program and finalizing plans to add a women's sport along with men's lacrosse.

The addition of men's lacrosse for 2016 was considered by the administration over the last month at CSU, but athletic director John Parry said this week the timeline has been pushed back.

He said a decision could be made in March and, if approved, Parry would look to hire a coach in spring of 2015 that could recruit the program's inaugural class for an entire year.

This doesn't appear to imply that Cleveland State is cooling on the idea of adding a Division I men's lacrosse program. Rather, it reflects a decision to not race into something without the proper resources and plans to find success on the field. With an extended timeline to address all issues involved with sponsoring a program, the Vikings could -- in the long run -- actually end up in a stronger position than the program would have been in had Cleveland State stuck to a truncated period to get a team off the ground and into interstellar lacrosse competition.

When you're ready for us, Cleveland State, we'll be ready for you.

Corey McLaughlin of Lacrosse Magazine has the scoop.

When you started your Friday -- a Friday in the heart of fall with college football on the horizon -- did you expect to read about potentially mind-blowing college lacrosse news? If not, blame Lacrosse Magazine's Corey McLaughlin for Friday becoming a launch pad rather than an interminable countdown.

As he writes, Cleveland State -- that's a real place with buildings and students and everything -- is considering adding a Division I men's lacrosse program as early as the 2016 season:

Cleveland State athletic director John Parry told Lacrosse Magazine on Friday that adding Division I men's and women's lacrosse for the spring 2016 season is under consideration as part of an enrollment strategy to attract more students to the school.

"It's not a done deal," Parry said, adding that the possibility has been talked about by the CSU administration for the past two years. But he is hopeful the additions will make it into the university's enrollment task force recommendations to the CSU Board of Trustees in November.

"It's one of those things that would have to be resolved in the next month and a half if we want to field a team in '16," Parry said. "If we miss that window, I refuse to try to hire somebody in April and have them recruit, it's too late. If we miss this November, it will be next November that it's back under consideration."

There are obviously a lot of variables covered in those three paragraphs, but if the Vikings were to make lacrosse a thing at the urban campus, Cleveland State would stand with Ohio State as the state's only Division I men's programs.

The potential birth of Cleveland State as a viable lacrosse concern isn't quite as sexy as a Power Five school moving toward a Division I program, but it is good to see a school in a non-hotbed location seriously consider the benefits of sponsoring a men's team at the college game's highest level while seeking to do so with the right kind of support to generate success. Now we wait.
