Huguely, who was found guilty of second-degree murder and grand larceny in the death of Virginia women's lacrosse player Yeardley Love, was sentenced to 26 years in prison for his crimes. The maximum sentence the jury could have imposed, based on the two verdicts, was 60 years imprisonment. 25 years are based on the second-degree murder conviction; the remaining year is for the grand larceny conviction stemming from his stealing of Love's computer.
No comments really necessary
I don't know much about professional lacrosse, be it Major League Lacrosse, National Lacrosse League, or any of those alphabet soup Canadian leagues they have up in Poutineville. Luckily, SB Nation has a site dedicated to professional lacrosse. (I'm just as shocked as you.) It's called In Lax We Trust, and Marisa writes a weekly professional prospects piece that'll get you all tuned up for professional lacrosse season. (Which starts at some point, I assume. Now? Later? I'm not sure.)
"I just went in and played the best I could for my team," he said. "I saw the ball really well today." One half of the Syracuse Orange goalie rotation, Matt Lerman, on his first career start in the Carrier Dome. Expect to see a lot more from Lerman in coming games. The kid can flat out play and is one of the better ball stoppers Syracuse has had in the past few years. More to come on Lerman, as we will speak with him later this week about the 2012 season and what it meant to start Sunday's 12-7 win over Albany.
The Post StandardIt looks like Dom Starsia is going to have some extra coin lying around to buy all the pies (of which he will eat all of them). The Washington Post is reporting that the Virginia head coach signed a contract in January that will pay him about $250,000 per year through the 2016 season. This is in addition to the bank he makes through Virginia's relationships with its equipment and apparel suppliers. Item one one Starsia's to-do list should be to make one of those Scrooge McDuck gold coin swimming pools and take a dip. Welcome to an exciting new tax bracket.
From the Baltimore Sun: Chris Boland will not miss the remainder of the regular season after suffering what appeared to be a shoulder injury in No. 4 Johns Hopkins’ 12-6 victory over Towson on Friday night. Coach Dave Pietramala declined to elaborate on the senior attackman’s injury and said a timetable for his return was yet to be determined, but emphasized that doctors had concluded that Boland, a Jessup native and Boys’ Latin graduate, should be able to return to the lineup this spring. "Chris is a little banged up, but it’s not a season-ending injury," Pietramala said Monday morning. "So we’re happy to hear that, and he will be back."
The guys over at BCInterruption are testing fan support for resurrecting their old team now that city rival Boston University has decided to elevate its program to Division 1. Could the ACC possibly be looking North for 6th program once Syracuse joins?
"You can barely recognize anybody on the field," Desko said of his lineup. "You think about the team we had last year and where we were ranked and how many close games we had (seven decided by two or fewer goals). And then you see the scrimmages and how many mistakes we’ve made when teams are trying to limit our possessions. We have to play very efficiently to be successful."
John Desko, officially making Central New York crap its pants. Syracuse starts its season on Sunday against Albany in the Dome. No pressure or anything.
