From way downtown .... bang!: Miracle midfield, last-second shot lifts Westchester County lacrosse team to undefeated season.

It’s said “practice makes perfect,” but sometimes useful skills can be learned after practice. For one local lacrosse team, the season’s defining moment arrived at the most implausible time, CBS2’s Steve Overmyer reported Wednesday.

This is one strange story.

As reported by the Martha’s Vineyard Times, varsity girls lacrosse head coach Kurstin Moore and associate head coach Bob Hayman were both suspended Tuesday morning following an investigation into “school attendance and practice policies.” ... Yet there were other circumstances that made McCarthy’s announcement all the more controversial: Moore was actually in the process of giving birth to her second daughter when it was announced.

Ohio State named Amy Bokker its new women’s lacrosse head coach.

Amy Bokker has been named the third head coach in Ohio State women’s lacrosse program history, the department of athletics announced Tuesday (June 5). Bokker comes to Ohio State from Stanford, where she led the Cardinal to six conference titles and eight NCAA tournament appearances over 11 seasons as head coach. “We are thrilled to have Amy Bokker join the Ohio State family,” Janine Oman, deputy director of athletics and women’s lacrosse program administrator, said. “It is an exciting time for Buckeye lacrosse and good things are happening for Ohio State. Amy is the leader for us.”

Lacrosse turned around this teen’s life.

You will not find many 14-year-old students who already stand 6 feet tall and tip the scales at 280 pounds. If you do, it’s likely on a football field or a wrestling mat, not with a lacrosse stick in hand. But Briar DeLong isn’t exactly your typical teenager. In addition to his physical prowess, Briar already has a laundry list of challenges he faces each day.

World/National News

Today is the 75th anniversary of the landing at Normandy, more commonly known as D-Day, which helped lead to the liberation of Europe during World War II.

On June 6, 1944, an armada of 150,000 Allied soldiers landed on five beaches in Normandy, France. Their mission: to free Europe from Nazi control. It was the largest seaborne invasion in history, and included a collection of American, British, Canadian and Australian troops, with soldiers also coming from France, Czechoslovakia, Norway and Poland. Launched as the “Operation Overlord” campaign, the battle that initiated the invasion of Normandy is forever etched in history by one word: D-Day.

Check out the BBC’s coverage of the National Commemorative Event that took place yesterday to mark the 75th anniversary. The program begins at the 4:40 mark.
