FINAL! Raiders knock off No. 10 Syracuse 12-9. What a way to start!
— Colgate Lacrosse (@ColgateLacrosse) February 9, 2019
Welcome to Colgate, coach Karweck! In his first game as a Division I head coach, Colgate’s Matt Karweck helped lead his team to a victory over Syracuse in the Carrier Dome 12-9. The Raiders jumped out to an early 3-0 lead and were never really threatened by Syracuse for much of the evening, as the Orange offense disappeared for long stretches of the game. Indeed, Syracuse only scored 3 goals in the first half, and while the Orange were able to claw back into the game and cut a 7-3 Colgate lead with 11:08 to play in the 3rd quarter, to a 7-6 deficit with 13:37 left to play in the fourth, the Raiders finished the quarter on a 5-3 run to close out the game and complete the upset 12-9.
This is a remarkable start to the 2019 season for Colgate. Indeed, the Orange beat the Raiders 17-5 last year in Colgate’s last game of the year. To come back and in less than a year defeat Syracuse, on the road, in their new coach’s debut, is quite an achievement. This is the first Colgate win over Syracuse since 2008 and the first win in the Dome since 2007. Colgate was led on offense by Nicky Petkevich, who cashed in with four goals on the evening, while his teammate Duncan Hoskinson added three more goals of his own.
Syracuse’s Nate Solomon & Brendan Curry each had three goals tonight, but it wasn’t enough to drag the Orange to victory, as only one other Syracuse player, David Lipka, had more than one point this evening. Syracuse’s Jakob Phaup had a good day at face-off, going 8-13 and Drake Porter also had a pretty good night in the cage with 15 saves in the game.
Syracuse will have to find some more offense in the coming weeks or it could be a long season for the Orange faithful. Here is the official box score of the game. Colgate’s recap is not up yet, but I will update this post as soon as it becomes available.
