In what is becoming an annual tradition, BU won its season opener over Providence by one goal today, just like it did in 2017 & 2018. However, unlike the previous two season openers, the Terriers were able to finish off the Friars in regulation and didn’t need overtime this year. as BU was able to score three of the final four goals in the fourth quarter to turn a 5-6 third quart deficit into an and 8-7 victory. Junior goalkeeper Joe McSorley played a huge role in BU’s victory today as his career-high 24 saves helped overcome BU overcome its 23 turnovers and escape Rhode Island with a victory.

Review
Providence certainly had its chances to finish off BU today. Indeed, the Friars beat the Terriers in total shots, shots on goal, and were 18-20 on clears. The Friars defense was extremely solid, especially its ride, which caused BU to fail to clear 11 of its 30 attempts. Providence just couldn’t account for the fact that BU’s goalie was going to make nearly 25 saves on the day. There are many positive things to take away from this game if you are a Providence fan, but losing another 1-goal game after suffering a half dozen of them last season is certainly a bitter pill to swallow.
McSorley deserves much of the credit for the win today. He was one save short of matching Christian Carson-Banister’s program single-game record 25 saves against Duke in 2014. BU Star Chris Gray totaled 4 points this afternoon to lead the Terriers offense (3 Gs, 1 A). James Burr was also big for BU today with 3 points (2 Gs, 1 A). BU was also helped by sophomore Sean Christman going 8-11 at face-off today, including 4-5 in the fourth quarter to help BU rally back and defeat the Friars.
