GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD MORNING, College Crosse Nation! Thanks for making us a part of your day! Here’s everything you need to know for February 19, 2019.

College Crosse News

It’s Aggregation time! We released our Week 2 Top 20 Poll yesterday, as did USILA, Inside Lacrosse, & US Lacrosse Magazine. Below is a chart with the Week 2 Top 20 poll results from each of the national polls.

2019 Week 2 Poll Aggregation

With Loyola & Penn State having such hot starts, you couldn’t go wrong with chosen either of them for the top spot. We took that idea to the extreme as both the Greyhounds & the Nittany Lions tied for first place on our poll. There are some really interesting match-ups this weekend, including Penn State vs. Yale, so we’re probably going to see even more change in the polls by this time next week.

#AnotherOne: High Point went out to Klockner Stadium last night and knocked off Virginia to grab their second road victory in 2019 over an ACC Team.

A fourth-quarter surge by No. 13 High Point (4-0) lifted the Panthers over the No. 12 Virginia Cavaliers (1-2) on Monday night, 14-13, at Klöckner Stadium. UVA entered the final period with a 12-11 lead before High Point reeled off three-straight goals to take a 14-12 lead with 2:02 left to play.

Jeff Conner brought UVA to within one goal, 14-13, with 1:04 left to play. HPU won the ensuing faceoff and tried to kill the clock. UVA goalie Alex Rode forced a turnover and the Cavaliers had a chance for one more play. UVA attackman Matt Moore unleashed a shot with a couple seconds left, but High Point goalie Tim Troutner made his 17th save of the game to end the HPU win. The win for the Panthers is their second this season against an ACC team. They won at then-No. 2 Duke on Feb 6, 13-9.

And the Panthers led off Sportscenter with Scott Van Pelt.

#FreeALexChu: Lacrosse player being forced to sit because there’s not a helmet big enough to protect his head.

A college lacrosse player is being forced to sit on the sidelines because he’s got a big head, and no one can find a helmet big enough to protect it. The Boston Globe interviewed Wheaton College freshman Alex Chu, who said that without a helmet approved by the NCAA, he is permitted only to run sprints with the team and cannot play in games when the season begins. “Lacrosse is kind of my whole life,” Chu told the Globe. “I can’t remember ever going this long without playing.”

R.I.P.: Aspen lacrosse coaches remembered after dying in avalanche.

Life can change on a dime. Two beloved lacrosse coaches at Aspen High School will never again cheer on their teams from the sidelines. Mike Goerne and Owen Green were both killed in an avalanche on Saturday. For Barbie Cottrell, the news is heartbreaking. Cottrell lost her husband when her twin boys were very young. Coach Goerne helped fill the void. He not only coached her kids, he taught them to be men. Nick Cottrell is now the captain of the lacrosse team at the University of Colorado.

“I think Mike is who helped create Nick. He’s such a good leader, a good person, and I think he learned all that from Mike. He mean so much to our kids and me,” said Cottrell.

Meet the new kids on the block at University of Chicago.

What’s Up, PhilaJersey?

Ok: Backyard chickens may soon be legal in Philly.

You can own backyard chickens in New York City. You can own backyard chickens in Los Angeles. You can own backyard chickens in Baltimore. The list goes on and on. But one of the only major American cities where you can’t own backyard chickens is right here in Philadelphia — though that might change soon.

A bill has been introduced in City Council that would legalize backyard chickens in Philadelphia. Oh, they don’t really have to be in your backyard, per se. That’s just what people who own chickens in urban areas tend to call them, so we’ll just go along with that.

World/National News

I would’ve gone with Margate, NJ: Tiny South African beach voted best in the world.

A tiny beach restaurant in an isolated South African fishing village was named the best in the world on Monday. Chef Kobus van der Merwe, who did not begin to cook seriously until he was 30, forages every day for ingredients on the wild Atlantic shore of the Western Cape near his Wolfgat restaurant, where he also makes his own bread and butter. The Wolfgat -- whose six mostly female staff have no formal training -- opened just two years ago in a 130-year-old cottage and cave on the beach at Paternoster.
