Previewing VMI’s 2019 men’s college lacrosse schedule

Will the Keydets find a way to win more than two games this season?

Chuck Steenburgh Photography

The VMI Keydets are the eighth team in our 2019 schedule preview series and the second team from the Southern Conference. The Keydets finished 2-11 in 2018 and 0-7 in SoCon play. It was the second straight season VMI won two games, beating Hampton and NJIT in both seasons.

Here’s their entire 2019 schedule:

Circle These Dates

  • 2/23 (vs. NJIT): The Highlanders were one of two teams the Keydets defeated in 2018. NJIT was also the only team that played a full Division I schedule between them and Hampton. This could be the best chance for either team to win a game this season.
  • 3/5 (at Wagner): Last year’s meeting started out slow, before the two teams exploded for four goals each in the fourth quarter. VMI made things interesting with 1:58 left, but the Keydets couldn’t get the equalizer in the loss to the Seahawks. VMI could take advantage of Wagner and their uncertainty at head coach.
  • 4/6 (at Bellarmine): The Keydets played the Knights to a three-goal loss, which was their closest loss against a SoCon opponent. Things didn’t get any easier for VMI with Bellarmine hiring Jim Mitchell as their new head coach over the summer. The Knights did lose some personnel in John Hulsman and Michael Autry, which could help the Keydets.
  • 4/27 (at Furman): The SoCon and regular season finale comes against a team VMI also played a close game against a year ago. The Keydets and Paladins were stuck in a six-all tie with 4:54 left in the third quarter before the Paladins went off for five straight tallies, including four in the final quarter.
