GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD MORNING, College Crosse Nation! Thanks for making us a part of your day! Here’s everything you need to know for October 5, 2018.
College Crosse News
The Kid Chris broke down Jacksonville’s 2019 schedule.
The Jacksonville Dolphins are the seventh team in our 2019 schedule preview series and the first team from the Southern Conference. The Dolphins finished 8-7 in 2018 and 5-2 in SoCon play. Jacksonville made it to the SoCon title game but fell to Richmond in overtime.
Circle These Dates
2/15 (vs. Marquette): Jacksonville clawed back from a three-goal halftime deficit to tie things up with in the fourth quarter. But Marquette’s John Wagner won things with seven seconds left in regulation in Wisconsin. Both teams look to compete for their respective conference titles and are two of the more young and trendier programs in college lacrosse.
2/24 (vs. Michigan): The Moe’s Lacrosse Classic includes the Wolverines, who had a very good season under Kevin Conry. After a second half to a season that featured upset road wins over Notre Dame and Penn State, Michigan hopes 2019 is the season they make a larger impact in the Big Ten.
3/8 (vs. Towson in Charlotte, NC): An interesting addition to their schedule is a weekend in Charlotte where the Dolphins will take on Towson and Penn State. The Tigers are first and had a disappointing 2018 after reaching Championship Weekend two years ago. The defense improved throughout the year, especially from Shane Brennan, but the offense was a young unit. They should be better against a Dolphin defense led by Dixon Smith and goalie Hunter Sells.
Speaking of Jacksonville, shout out to their video manager for this one.
Syracuse lacrosse sets rosters for alumni game.
It will be another great day for Syracuse lacrosse nostalgia Saturday in the Carrier Dome. Players from seven decades of SU lacrosse, including members of 11 NCAA championship rosters and players who combined for 27 All-America honors, will suit up in the Orange Alumni Classic Legends’ Game. The roster, which has broken up the 52 alumni returning into two 26-man teams, features players from the graduating class of 1949 up to 2018 graduates, including seven players who are currently playing in Major League Lacrosse.
Get your Dive on.
It may be fall but it’s still hot in Providence.
Syracuse women’s lacrosse assistant coach Regy Thorpe jumped on the Fred Opie podcast to discuss his lacrosse background and his time with the Orange.

Terry O’Connor keeps giving hugs. It’s how she’s greeted everyone who’s walked through her front door the past two weeks. How she’s coped with the unimaginable loss her family has gone through. It’s what she thinks her son, Brendan, would want her to do. “I know he wants me to be tough,” Terry said. “I’m the mama bear. But right now, all I need is a hug. I can’t say it enough.” Brendan O’Connor died on Sept. 19 while practicing lacrosse with his younger brother, Liam, at Cabrini College. He was three weeks away from his 23rd birthday.

Mike Powell on lacrosse memories, music and “Shelter Without Walls.”
If the name Mike Powell merely stokes memories of one the greatest lacrosse players in Syracuse University history, boy do we have something to tell you. Mike joins Brent Axe on Episode 44 of the Syracuse Sports Podcast to talk a little lacrosse, but mostly for a deep dive on his new album ‘Shelter Without Walls,’ out everywhere on October 5. Mike is also embarking on a pretty ambitious tour in October and will record a live album on October 13 and 14 at the Nelson Odean near Cazenovia.
I’m reloaded!: Yale Lacrosse is ready to defend the crown.
Here’s a great Stony Brook video from the Tunnel 2 Towers 5K run.
What’s Up, PhilaJersey?
WE’RE NUMBER 1: NJ is the most stressed-out state in the union.
You’re stressed out. I’m stressed out. We’re all stressed out. It’s official: New Jersey is the most stressed out state in the U.S. (at least according to a recent report by Zippia). Garden State? More like The Agita State. Is it our long work hours? Having to sit in traffic on Route 1 (probably)? Are there just too many people in this state and we’re all driving each other insane? According to the report, New Jersey is more stressed out than New York.
World/National News
In a spat with a loved one and can’t reach a resolution? Hug it out. A new study finds that hugs shield us from the harmful effects of a soured mood that come from arguments and conflicts with others. Researchers from Carnegie Mellon University say people who consider themselves huggers actually have better overall health and stronger relationships. Previous research has shown the benefits of hugs and the role of touch, but studies have typically focused on romantic relationships. This latest work sought to examine the power of hugging among various social circles.
