Previewing Mount St. Mary’s 2018 Schedule

Can the Mountaineers make the NEC Tournament?

Mount St. Mary’s Athletics

The Mount St. Mary’s Mountaineers are the 70th team in our 2018 schedule preview series and the seventh and final team from the NEC. The Mountaineers went 4-10 in 2017 and failed to qualify for the NEC Tournament with a 1-5 conference record.

Here’s the entire 2018 schedule:

The Mountaineers replace Bellarmine and Furman with Mercer and UMBC.

Let’s check out some notable games on this schedule:

Best Nonconference Game: @ Georgetown

The Mount battled the Hoyas to a tough 11-9 loss last year. Austin McDonald and Peter Conley had three goals, and Daniel Bucaro put up four. That can’t happen this time around. Luckily, Conley is now at Duke.

Best Conference Game: vs. Wagner

The NEC will be a tough cookie for the Mountaineers to prevail in, but the Seahawks will be an entertaining game, as always. But the Mount did play in some very entertaining conference games in the second half in the year against Bryant and Robert Morris.

Under The Radar Game: vs. Mercer

It’ll be the first time these two teams play each other. We should have a fun battle between both teams. Whereas Mercer loses Lucas Wittenberg to Georgetown, the Mount still has junior attackman Chris DiPretoro, who led the team with 29 goals and 38 points a year ago.

Possible Upset: vs. Hobart

The Statesmen looked like NEC champions before falling to Bryant in the conference title game. They did have some eyebrow raising losses last year to teams like Colgate and Georgetown. There’s always a possibility of having another slipup, and the Statesmen won’t have Jackson Brown or Frank Brown this season.
