Previewing Hampton’s 2018 Schedule

The Pirates look to continue making small strides as a program in their third year of existence.

Daniel Sangjib Min (Richmond Times-Dispatch)

The Hampton Pirates are the 60th team in our 2018 schedule preview series and the second independent team. The Pirates went 1-7 last year playing a mixture of teams across the three NCAA divisions, but recorded their first ever win as a varsity program with a 7-5 victory over Greensboro.

Here’s the entire 2018 schedule:

Hampton’s 2018 Schedule

Date Road Team Home Team Special Notes Last Year's Meeting(s)
Date Road Team Home Team Special Notes Last Year's Meeting(s)
2/3 Lincoln Memorial (D2) Hampton First ever meeting
2/23 University of DC (D2) Hampton 19-15 L
3/4 Hampton Greensboro (D3) 7-5 W
3/5 Westminster (D3) Hampton First ever meeting
3/14 Bethany (D3) Hampton First ever meeting
3/20 Hampton Wagner 10-3 L
3/31 Hampton VMI 14-1 L
4/4 Chowan (D2) Hampton First ever meeting
4/7 Hampton Cleveland State First ever meeting
4/10 Hampton Alderson Broaddus (D2) First ever meeting
4/14 Hampton NJIT 17-3 L
4/18 Potomac State (NJCAA) Hampton First ever meeting
4/28 Saint Thomas Aquinas (D2) Hampton 13-7 L

The Pirates increased their game total from eight last year to 13, which is a full slate of games. Ohio Valley (D2) and Roberts Wesleyan (D2) are off the schedule, while Alderson Broaddus (D2), Bethany (D3), Chowan (D2), Cleveland State, Lincoln Memorial (D2), Potomac State (NJCAA), and Westminster (D3) have all been added.

Let’s check out some notable games on this schedule:

Best Game: @ Greensboro (D3)

Since they’re an independent, we’ll make it the best game out of the entire schedule. After a historic win against Greensboro last year, let’s see how Lloyd Carter’s group of guys do this year on the road. They’re a Division III team, but a win’s a win in the case of the Pirates.

Under The Radar Game: vs. Potomac State (NJCAA)

I’m not gonna lie, I don’t know a ton about the JuCo level except for a handful of teams, but Potomac State didn’t do so well last year against teams like Harford and Howard. They’re good, I know that. We’ll see how the Pirates do with a JuCo team, and I think we might have a better feeling of how Hampton is.

Possible Upset: University of DC (D2)

I wanted to pick a Division I school, but I don’t think the Pirates are ready to make that huge leap yet. John Tarver, Kendall Sapp, and Lemuel Randolph will look to make some progress this year, and the UDC game would be a great start. They lost by only four last year.
