One of the reasons for Towson’s recent success has come from goaltender Matt Hoy, who had a career-high 12 saves against Syracuse. His emergence has been big, from US Lacrosse Magazine’s Matt Hamilton.
Towson’s backup goalie heading into the 2017 season just helped extend it another week.
“It was really nice getting that first one and getting the confidence on what I see as their best shooter right from the get-go,” Hoy said of saving the first shot from Nick Mariano. “And kind of as the game wore on, I can’t explain it, you get into a zone as a goalie.”
[Shawn] Nadelen said Hoy’s effort just added to a complete game from his defense.
“It was a team effort,” Nadelen said. “When you’ve got have really nice defensive midfield, I put a lot of faith and trust in those guys and in the supporting cast around them along with Matt [Hoy] in the cage. … He definitely stole some goals for us in that fourth quarter to keep Syracuse at bay and really seal the game for us.”
Edward Lee of The Baltimore Sun spoke to Mark Dixon to discuss this weekend’s games.
Which semifinal most appeals to you?
I think both appeal to me, but if you’re looking for intrigue, you’ve got to look at Maryland-Denver. This is a replay of the 2015 title game where Denver won, 10-5. I think you have to look at the faceoffs. How will it be officiated? What will be the approach from Maryland to neutralize Trevor Baptiste? How will Denver defend Maryland? If you’re looking for a crack in the glass for Denver, it’s their six-on-six defense and goaltending at times, although they were very good against Notre Dame on Saturday. And both teams enjoy long possessions. They have very potent, powerful offenses, but they both like to take their time with the ball. How will the game be officiated in terms of the shot clock? What will be the tempo? Although both games hold a ton of intrigue, I think the Maryland-Denver game for the reasons I just laid out may have more storylines.
Would it be fair to say that the winner of that semifinal will boast the Tewaaraton Award winner?
I think so. Like I said, I think Matt Rambo has already established himself as the best player in the country. Trevor Baptiste is fantastic and great, but I know we’ve talked about this before. It’s like giving [Ravens kicker] Justin Tucker the MVP award in the NFL. Trevor Baptiste is a FOGO [Face Off, Get Off]. He’s obviously dangerous. He’s a freight train, and he’s scored 12 goals this year, but he doesn’t play regular offensive shifts. He is the focal point for a lot of opponents’ game plans, but only for 10 seconds at a time when facing off. Matt Rambo is public enemy No. 1 for opposing coaches. But whoever has the best postseason, to the victor goes the spoils. So I wouldn’t be surprised if Denver wins this game to see Trevor Baptiste walk away with the Tewaaraton. But if I had a vote, it would go to Matt Rambo.
Congrats to the grads!

In high school action in Maryland’s MIAA “A” semifinals, top-seeded Calvert Hall took care of Loyola-Blakefield, while No. 2 seed McDonogh worked their way past Boys’ Latin. The two teams will play in the MIAA “A” championship game Thursday night at Homewood Field.
In the NCAA Women’s Division II championship game, Adelphi used a 4-1 second half to defeat defending champion Florida Southern, 6-4, for their third title in four years.
